Nyirenda: the journalist in question was summoned for a hearing last week

Football Association of Malawi (FAM) is investigating one of the electronic media journalists over allegations that he offered Benin national soccer team technical information on how they could beat the Flames last weekend.

The journalist in question (name with-held), works for state broadcaster Malawi Broadcasting Corporation (MBC).

He was summoned by FAM last week after his text purpotedly meant to be sent to a Benin FA high-ranking official, mistakenly went to Flames liason officer James Sangala.

Part of the text seen by The Nation reads: “Hie boss this is a journalist who travelled with the Malawi team and I just wanted to say may the Almighty God bless you abundantly for helping me. I will, in return, pay you by assisting you with information to beat Malawi at home. Let’s talk, I am ready to do anything for you boss.”

FAM chief executive officer Suzgo Nyirenda said the journalist in question was summoned for a hearing last week where the president of Sports Writers Association of Malawi (Swam), Peter Kanjere, was also in attendance as an observer.

“The issue has since been referred to our legal advisers for their perusal.

“It should also be pointed out that at no time did the journalist dispute sending the text during the hearing,” said Nyirenda.

And in a press statement yesterday, Swam said it is “following such an incident with utmost interest.

  1. That is what half baked journalist does, begging like nobody’s business.they can do anything like prostitutes as far as money/cash is involved. Paja winanso analandira K200,000 just to write a headline story in the sunday times kuti two young ladies have tied a knot in BT. Please have a Journalism regulatory body where reckless journalists must be punished/banned.

  2. I personally don’t think there is an issue here. Football is just a sport. Being Malawian does not automatically make one a National football team supporter. If the said journalist was not a FAM employee then let the matter rest. Why summon a journalist for questioning over helping an opposing team? If he wanted to be paid by that team, then that’s fine. He was just promising to do what he was to be paid for. I wld only take offense if this journalist was employed or had some kind of position at FAM. We are all at Liberty to support or help any team of our choice.
Look at Jurgen Klinsman, at the just ended World Cup he did everything in his power to bring down German nation team. Yet he is a full blown German. He was even once a full time Germany coach, And prior to that he also played for the Germany team for so many years.
Did you hear Germans baying for his blood???

    1. There’s always a possibility he intended to fix the match by getting players to throw away the game.
